Work Classification
The rule โ One-and-done request โ Update. An ongoing thread โ Initiative. Feedback on active work โ Revision.
Initiative โ an open, ongoing conversation that keeps generating requests. Gets a strategic plan first, has its own review (review.sga.team), and takes one of the client's active slots.
Update โ a self-contained, one-and-done request. Executed directly, takes no slot, but still logs hours.
Revision โ feedback on a deliverable already in production, in the same approved direction. Handled in the review tool inside its parent initiative; not a separate intake type.
Why nature of work, not hours
We used to call anything over ~2 hours an Initiative. That mixed unrelated items together and made the board hard to read. The cleaner line is whether the item closes after one action (Update) or is a continuing thread (Initiative). Changed 2026-06-11 โ supersedes the 2-hour rule.
Examples
- Update โ "Update the image on the team page." Done once, closed.
- Initiative โ a site transfer that spins off follow-ups for weeks.
- Revision โ "Make the hero headline bigger" on a deliverable in review.
Decision pending โ whether the "Work Type" Asana field is kept (the Status app doesn't read it; placement may be enough). See Asana Structure.
